Hi everyone, I hope you are all well? We have a lovely sunny morning today but definitely you feel the real winter is coming very soon. For me it’s the Christmas craft fair season as well. I’m organising the third annual Ichi Artisan Winter Market next Saturday with our Japanese friend, Mari Wirth, who is a wonderful paper-cut artist. All the event details can be found here. I hope we can see some of you!
The Japanese enamel rings in the photos, Rhoni Ring, will be at the fairs. I was inspired by the ring which Chris’ mum Rhoni left for us. The following black and white photography was part of a fun Facebook nomination project, which includes some of Rhoni’s beautiful glassware. I hope you enjoy them!
皆様こんにちは。お元気ですか？ 今朝はとても気持ちの良いお天気の朝を迎えています。確実に本格的な冬が近づいてはいますが。。。私にとってこの季節はクリスマスクラフトフェアのシーズン。一週間後の土曜日、今年3回目となる Ichi Artisan Winter Marketというイベントを、素晴らしい切り絵＆グラフィックアーチストのまりさんと一緒に開催します。その他のイベントに関しては、こちらにて詳細をご覧くださいね。
写真の七宝リングは、クリスのママ、ロニーの指輪にインスパイアされデザインしたもので、今回のクリスマスフェアにも出品します。以下にご紹介するのは、ロニーが残してくれガラス花瓶等のモノクロ写真。数年前、フェイスブックで流行ったリレー式ゲームの一部。楽しんで頂けると嬉しいです。
Rhoni left us some wonderful glassware. This vase is one of my favourites, I love the Art-Deco feel and design giving it a bold presence.
この花瓶は中でも最も気に入っている一つ。アール・デコの雰囲気がして、この存在感に何とも惹かれます。
Haiku, one of our four Maine Coon cats and an inkwell Chris gave me. At one point I was totally fascinated by the old-fashioned pen and ink writing and drawings.
四匹のメインクーン猫のうちの一匹、俳句と、クリスがプレゼントしてくれたビンテージのインク壺。いっ時、古風なペンとインクでカリグラフィーの練習をしたり絵を描いたりするのに夢中でした。
Rhoni’s beautiful decanter and her Mother-of-Pearl Chatelaine perfume bottle pendant. It seems like this style was originally inspired by French antiques during the Victorian period. Chatelaine is a term to indicate a woman looking after keys at mansions and castles. Being a chatelaine was a status symbol that period. It is said that Chatelaine perfume bottles were originally used to put vinaigrette or water. In those days, there were no pockets in dresses to keep small things and there wasn't a sink everywhere where these women could wash their finger tips.
ロニーのデキャンターと白蝶貝をあしらったシャトレイン香水瓶。ペンダントはフランスの骨董で、イギリスでは19世紀ビクトリア時代に人気のあったスタイルのようです。シャトレインは元々フランス語で女城主を表す言葉だそう。あらゆる鍵の管理をしていたシャトレインは当時ステイタスシンボルであったようです。洋服にポケットの無い時代、女性が手軽に手を洗えるシンク等があちこちに設置されていな時代、そもそもは香水ではなく、気付け薬や、指先を洗う水が入れられていたとか。
Freya and Mochi with a couple of glasses storage jars. I can’t get enough of collecting shells, stones, sand or sea plants when I go to a beach. These might be from Helmesdale, Scotland or Devon, England.
フレヤと餅とガラスの蓋つき瓶。確かロニーのキッチンの棚にあって使われていなかったので、欲しいと頼んでもらったもの。海辺に行くと貝がらや石、砂、海藻などを拾うが大好きで、これらはスコットランドの北部か、イングランドの南西部のどこかから集めてきたもの達。
Our oldest and biggest cat, Ghost and a beer bottle, we bought it in a lovely farmers market / delicatessen in Lake District. I found the label pretty. According to the Yorkshire’s oldest brewery’s website, this beer was originally designed to withstand the harsh shipping conditions and weather on its journey to Imperial Russia where it was popular amongst Russian nobility.
四匹の中で一番年上で一番大きなゴーストと、ラベルの素敵な麦酒ボトル。イングランド湖水地方の高速道路沿いサービスエリアのファーマーズマーケット&デリカテッセンで見つけました。このビールはイングランド、ヨークシャー州最古、19世紀の醸造所が船による輸出、悪天候にも品質を保てるようにと開発されたビールで、18-20世紀のロシア帝国でグルメな貴族の間で流行していたものだとか。
Chris gave me this beautiful feather. He knows what pleases me the most. The feather is actually swan’s and it’s quite big. This was brought from the Forest of Dean, near the border of England, where J.K. Rowling would have a walk when she was living around there. I love this photo so I use it for one of the banners on this website.
The 24 Seasons is ‘Beginning of Winter’ and the 72 Micro Seasons is ‘Land Starts to Freeze. ‘

最後はイングランドとの国境沿い、ディーンの森の水辺でクリスが見つけた白鳥の羽。この森はハリーポッター作者の J.K.ローリングが昔よく散策していた場所でもあるようです。映画でもロケ地として使われたそう。
二十四節気は立冬。72候 は地始凍 (ちはじめてこおる) 。
