Hope you are all well? At the moment we are in Brittany, France taking part in the Festival Interceltique Lorient and enjoying the great weather, food and friendly people.

A fortnight ago, I introduced some cloisonne enamelling materials as well as tools. Today I’d like to talk about one of the traditional Japanese patterns called Tatewaku.

皆様こんにちは、お元気ですか？ 私たちは現在フランスブルターニュ地方に来ています。素晴らしい気候に食べ物、そして毎年再会する家族のような仲間達との時間を楽しんでいます。

前回のスタジオレポートで、有線七宝の材料と工具の一部をご紹介しましたが、今回は古代より愛されている立涌という日本の伝統紋様をご紹介致します。

TATEWAKU WHITE BLOSSOMS

This is an ancient design said originally to be from Sassanian Persia and brought to Japan via the Silk Road. The pattern was exclusively used for kimono of scholars and researchers working for the court during the Heian period (794-1185). The design symbolises the steam rising from the ground early on a spring morning.

立涌は元々ササン朝ペルシャよりシルクロードを経て伝わった、平安時代における有職紋様の一つでした。デザインは春、地面から湧き上がる蒸気を表し、新しい季節を祝っています。特に平安時代皇室の学者や研究者が着用していた着物柄に限られて使用されたデザインでした。

TATEWAKU DAMASK

I combined the Tatewaku design with a motif representing weft threads, to create a pattern that represents the ‘weaving of a new story in a new season’. I named it Tatewaku Damask. I chose the oval shape because the word ‘oval’ originates from the Latin for egg; as the egg has long been a symbol of new life, it highlights the celebration of a new season.

上の写真は、蒸気の縦のデザインに横糸を通して、新しい季節に物語を紡ぐという願いを込めて。立涌ダマスクという名前を付けました。楕円を意味する英語のovalはラテン語の卵が語源。新しい命の誕生を象徴する卵型を新たな季節のお祝いに。

Another design is called Tatewaku Scholar. I combined elements of the Tatewaku design with patterns inspired by calligraphy brushes to create a design that looks like a flower.

According to the ancient Japanese calendar, 72 Seasons, it’s ‘Great Rains Sometimes Fall’. I hope you have a little rain to cool you down in this heat.

Next week, I’ll introduce the last two of our Maine Coon cats, the gigantic wild boys Haiku and Mochi.

こちらは、立涌スカラー。紋様が学者や研究者の着物柄であったことから、筆を花柄に見立てたデザインを立涌のパターンの一部と合わせてました。
