Hello, everyone! I hope you are well? Can’t believe it’ll be September tomorrow!!
Here are some rings I’ve recently made. The enamel ring has a traditional Japanese design called Ichimatsu. It’s a simple checkerboard pattern and is named after a popular Kabuki actor from the Edo-era (1603-1867). It's been one of the most popular traditional patterns in Japan and it's also used for the emblem design of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games. Matsu is Japanese for pine and as an evergreen tree, it is regarded as an auspicious symbol. Pink and reddish colours are tricky for enamelling on silver so we normally use gold for the base.

さて、今日は最近作っていたリングの写真です。定番の槌目リングやスワンリングなどが中心ですが、七宝の入ったものは、来年の東京オリンピック、パラリンピックのエンブレムのデザインにも使われている市松模様。エンブレムのスタイルは正確には組市松紋と呼ばれるそう。素敵なコンセプトなんですね。七宝において、ピンクや赤系は銀に反応してしまう事が多いので通常ゴールドをベースに使います。
The middle ring is from Rhoni, Chris’ mum. I’ve been making some base rings for Champlevé style enamelling. This ring design reminds me of poppy seed pod I was talking about in the last post. When the seeds are ready to be harvested, the window-like parts of the seed pod capsule open and seeds inside pop out from the window. The coral and the white shell in the photo are souvenirs from Port Louis, Brittany.
真ん中に紺色の石の入っているリングは、クリスのママ、ロニーが残してくれた指輪です。デザインが可愛いので、新作として、石ではなく七宝を入れらるようにChamplevéの型を制作中です。このデザイン、前回の話にも登場したヒナゲシの種の房を連想させます。房が乾燥してくると、カプセル状の上部、傘のすぐ下に窓が開いてきて、収穫時期になるとこの窓のような穴から無数の種が収穫できる様です。写っている珊瑚と白い貝はフランスブルターニュ地方 ロリオン隣町の浜辺で拾ってきたもの。

We had a chance to visit York, north of England last month. I’d always wanted to see York Minster and took part in the interesting guided tour. But I actually enjoyed myself more spending time in the small garden of the Treasurer's House, a National Trust site right behind the Minster. It was a rainy day and my mood suited this quiet serene garden with seasonal flowers.
先月イングランドの北部ヨークを訪れる機会がありました。ずっと行ってみたかったヨーク大聖堂を見学して、ガイドツアーでの興味深い話も悪くなかったけれど、それよりもずっと充実した時間を過ごせたのは、すぐ裏手に建っていたナショナルトラスト Treasurer’s House の小さな庭でした。何となくその時の気分に、あの静かなひと気のない雨の庭が心地良かったです。

The 24 Seasons is ‘Manageable Heat’ and the 72 Micro Seasons is ‘Heat Starts to Die Down’. The day time has shortened dramatically here in Cardiff, but September is one of the most pleasant months of the year so not too bad.

二十四節気は処暑。72候は天地始粛 (てんちはじめてさむし) です。暑さがようやく鎮まってくる時期との事。少しずつ秋の気配をそこはかとなく感じるようになり始めますね。こちらカーディフは、九月は大抵お天気の日も多く気持ちの良い過ごしやすい季節なのですが、最近ぐっと日が短くなってきてちょっと寂しいです。日本では、残暑があまり厳しくありませんように。
