Hello, everyone! I hope you are well? We visited Bath last month. The whole city is designated as a World Heritage site and is really beautiful. As we’ve been to the city a few times, we didn’t just visit the typical sightseeing spots. Here are some black and white photos I took as we wandered around.
皆さま、こんにちは。お元気ですか？ 先月お隣イングランド、世界遺産の街バースを訪れました。バースの名はバス(ルーム)の語源だそう。２世紀頃、ローマ人により温泉地として発展しました。街全体が本当に美しいのですが、今回はバース大修道院を中心にモノクロ写真でご紹介します。
This is Bath Abbey, built in the 8th century then rebuilt in the 12th and 16th century. The magnificent single-piece wood carving door was made in the 15th century. It was donated to the abbey in the 17th century.
バース修道院の始まりは8世紀に遡り、12世紀から16世紀に渡り改装が繰り返されました。西側、一本の木から彫られているの荘厳な扉は15世紀に造られ、のちに17世紀に入ってこの修道院へ寄贈されたそうです。16世紀に起こったヘンリー8世による宗教改革で破壊されてしまったオリジナルのドアは一体どんなデザインだったのでしょう？
The original Norman style architecture would’ve had more elaborate with rounded arches rather than the pointed Gothic style of its later rebuilds.
12世紀頃の改修当初は、ノルマン様式に見られるより壮大なスケールで、より装飾的であったと想定され、現在のゴシックスタイルの特徴である先端が尖ったデザインではなく、丸いアーチのフォルムが使われていたと考えられているそう。
The 'Quire Angels' were donated in 2007. The design has two angelic violinists facing each other as if playing a duet, the left hand one is using her wing to shield her ears from the sound of the bagpiper next to her.
エンジェルの合奏団はだいぶ新しく2007年に寄贈されたもの。右二人はバイオリンでデュエットを奏でているようですが、片方の奏者は自分の羽根で隣のバグパイプ(左端)の大きな音を耳で塞いでいるような様子？
Though it’s hard to see from this angle but the abbey has wonderful flying buttresses, which is typical of Gothic architectural.
The 24 Seasons is ‘White Dew’ and the 72 Micro Seasons is Swallows Leave. While Japanese swallows fly back to the Southeast Asian countries or Australia, British birds are returning to South Africa. Wishing them all a safe journey to the south.

上の写真では分かりづらいですが、フライング・バットレスと呼ばれる建物の外観に架けた飛梁（とびばり）が見られます。この梁もゴシック建築の典型的な特徴だそう。
二十四節気は白露。72候 は玄鳥去 (つばめさる)。イギリスの燕が南アフリカへと帰る一方、春先日本へ飛来したツバメ達の越冬先は東南アジアやオーストラリアとの事。一日に300キロ以上に及ぶ距離を飛ぶ事もあるそうです。あの様な小さな体に宿る、無尽蔵なエネルギーを想像すると神秘的でさえありますね。どの燕も皆んな無事に越冬先へと辿り着きます様にと祈るばかりです。
折しも日本では大相撲秋場所。今年大活躍の幕内最軽量、炎鵬力士にも通じるものを感じます。彼が連日披露する、正に不撓不屈の精神、素晴らしい見事な取組みに毎日感動しています。
