Remained Blue Moon from Paulo & Rosanna’s Porto flat. I cherished the view every morning with roosters’ coos.
Hello, everyone! I hope you are doing well and enjoying the beautiful autumn. In August, I had a chance to visit Portugal, invited by an old friend from my days studying in London. This trip was to celebrate our friendship spanning over 30 years.
On a late-night flight, the view below from the sky was a collection of limited hues of lights, shimmering like scattered jewels. The alluring nocturnal panorama of Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, welcomed me and heightened my anticipation for the days ahead in the country I was visiting for the first time.
My holiday was based in my friends Paulo and Rosanna's flat in Porto. Over the coming months, I'll be sharing travel photos from Portugal along with my Scottish life report. I hope you'll enjoy my photo blog from August.
皆様こんにちは、お元気ですか? 8月、30年来となるロンドン留学時代の旧友に誘われ、ポルトガルを訪れました。
夜中近いフライト。よく夜景は宝石に例えられますが、他の都市のそれとは少し異なる様な、限られた色調に抑えられた光の集合が、何とも不思議な雰囲気です。幻想的な世界が久しぶりの渡航への緊張感をほぐし、初めて降り立つ土地への期待感が高まっていきました。
今月より数回に亘り、友人パウロとロザンナのフラットを拠点に、ポルトガル第二の都市ポルトを中心とした旅行写真をご紹介致します。

Fascinating streets are endless in Porto 魅了されずにいられない街並み。
This quaint broom shop reminded me of Naito Shoten in Kyoto. Wandering aimlessly, you can still encounter various intriguing discoveries.
京都桔梗利 内藤商店を彷彿とさせる昔ながらの箒専門店。あても無く歩いていても、様々な発見を楽しめる。
A man, seemingly dressed in a Scottish kilt, a girl with a gerbera daisy, and white doves in a cage. I came across this street performance duo multiple times during my stay in Porto.
スコットランドキルト思しき装いの彼とガーベラの女の子、そして白い伝書鳩。滞在中、何度も見かけた大道芸人の親子。
Castro, an atelier that specialises in pastéis de nata ポルトガルと言えば、こちらの伝統菓子。
While Rosanna was taking Portuguese language classes in the morning, I would wander the city on my own. I found this egg-tart specialty shop by chance. The small café was full, but one of the kind customers invited me to share her table, saying, "Would you like to join me?"
A blonde, typical Scandinavian-looking Norwegian woman from Amsterdam came to town for a friend's wedding. We started talking about a Vermeer documentary film based in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum I repeatedly watched before leaving Scotland. Our conversation continued as we discussed various topics, and unexpectedly, two strangers enjoyed a delightful time together.
滞在中、ロザンナがポルトガル語クラスを取っていた午前中は、いつも一人で街を散策。偶然通りかかったエッグタルト専門店。小さなカフェは満席でしたが一人の女性が、 "良かったら一緒にどうですか?" と、テーブルに誘ってくれました。
アムステルダムから友人の結婚式で街を訪れていると言う、ブロンドヘアで如何にも北欧女性らしいノルウェー出身の彼女。スコットランドを発つ前、繰返し観たアムステルダム美術館を舞台にしたフェルメールのドキュメンタリー映画も記憶に新しく、そんな話題からあれこれ会話が膨らみ、思いがけず見知らぬ旅人同士での楽しいひと時。
Portugal has numerous charming cafes. On a different day, an elderly lady in a pink cardigan and denim flared skirt quietly came into a cafe. She made her way to a group of women sitting at a nearby table and told them it was her regular seat.
Then, one of them sitting at the end of the table said, ``Here you go, please.'' She gave her seat to the elderly woman, and then said, ``Because I'm giving it to you, you have to treat me to lunch!'' winked the woman. At checkout, however, the woman paid for the elderly lady's coffee and cake as well.
In the city of Porto, you can easily imagine that lovely little stories like this are born every day here and there.
珈琲文化が深く根付くポルトガルは、チャーミングなカフェが数多く、別の日に入ったある店での出来事。
ピンク色のカーディガンにデニムのフレアスカートという出立ちの老婦がそろそろと入って来ました。私達の隣席の女性グループへと歩んで行き、 "ここは私の定席なのよ"と静かに呟く。
すると端の席の一人が、 ”では、どうぞ。”と、老婦に席を譲ったのち、”でも譲りますから私にランチを奢ってね!”と言い残す。
ところが席を譲った彼女、お会計の際には老婦のコーヒーとケーキ代まで一緒に支払っているのでした。
こんな小さな物語が、毎日あちこちで生まれているのだろうと容易に想像できるポルトの街。
I was impressed with the attention to the pretty details in design in Portugal.
ディテールまでいちいち素敵で感心する。

八月二度目の満月ブルームーンが残る朝の空。6階に位置するフラットからの眺め。

This year’s favourite homegrown tomatoes, the 'Cherokee Purple' heirloom variety

This year, Chris tried growing nearly 30 different types of tomatoes in our small greenhouse. Among them, my favourite was the Cherokee Purple variety, which was exceptionally delicious. I enjoyed the tomatoes with three types of paprika - sweet, bitter, and hot - and some hickory smoked salt.
今年は庭の小さな温室で、30種類近くのトマトを栽培。その中でダントツ美味しかったチェロキーパープル種。スイート、ビター、ホット3種のパプリカ、ヒッコリースモークソルトと共に。
