TATEWAKU Persimmon Necklace

£190.00

This is a unique rustic-style darkened sterling silver necklace, featuring a traditional ancient motif known as TATEWAKU. The design is inspired by Japanese traditional customs based on the ancient calendar known as the 24 Seasons.

Japan is renowned for its distinctive four seasons, and the year is further divided into 24 seasons, called Nijūshi Sekki. Even in this modern era, many traditional customs and events continue to align with the Nijūshi Sekki calendar.

EDO-KOMON SERIES : 'TATEWAKU'

Edo-komon are traditional Japanese designs from the Edo period (1603-1867). Edo-komon motifs consisting of auspicious symbols and patterns are the inspiration for many of my designs.

TATEWAKU is originally one of the traditional pattern designs known as Yusoku and was originally made to be used only for court nobles. 'Tatewaku' represents the steam rising from the ground in the spring when many living creatures start to get lively and is regarded as a good luck symbol.

The season when insects that have been in hibernation underground awaken with the arrival of spring. The seasonal cherry blossoms are believed to house deities and spirits. People have long been drawn to their splendid, delicate beauty and fleeting transience.
